"I have very much enjoyed our coaching sessions. You are a great listener and with your guidance I learned a lot about myself and my health issues. I can now apply these in my daily life and move forward with some very useful strategies."
"When I went to see Mary I wanted to deal with my weight problem. Mary listened and created a 'balance' around my issue. Mary has had a fantastic and most positive impact on many areas of my life, and of course she very much helped with my initial problem. I would highly recommend Mary to anyone!"
"The sessions were very helpful and I would definitely recommend Mary to other people who are looking to make lifestyle and wellbeing changes."
What is coaching?
In very simple terms, coaching helps you to get from where you are now, to where you want to be.
Coaching is about unlocking your potential to achieve what you want to - through a learning and development process, rather than being told what to do. It is enabling, empowering, and practical.
A coaching session will involve a discussion about what you would like to achieve, working out how you're going to get there, and devising strategies to overcome obstacles that might be getting in your way. It will flow at a pace that is comfortable for you, is positive, collaborative, informative, non-judgemental and solutions-focused.
Health coaching is relatively new to the UK, so you may not be familiar with what health coaches do. According to the UK Health Coaches Association:
A Health Coach is a wellness professional trained to support, educate and empower you to find your way to better health
We help you discover health promoting lifestyle choices unique to your needs and support you to learn how to include them in your life for positive, lasting change
Health coaching is a tool that complements other parts of the health system. There is so much information out there – how do you know what to believe? How do you ever get the time to read it all? Health coaching can help you cut your own path through the overwhelming forest of advice and options.
Furthermore, knowledge is not enough to change behaviour. A coaching programme will help you overcome barriers such as needing to change habits, dealing with procrastination, and challenging beliefs such as not being able to achieve what you want.
What coaching services do I offer? Coaching programmes are always personalised, so the best thing is to contact me to have a chat about what you're looing for. To give you an idea of what might be involved, I have outlined a couple of typical coaching programmes.
Discovery Programme- the 'what' When you set the satnav in your car, you know where you’re starting from, and you know where you’re going to.
Using the same principle, I work with you to identify where you are at present by creating your own personal lifestyle profile, then I support you to decide where you want to go.
Your destination will be realistic for you in terms of time, energy, family/work commitments, money and your own personal objectives. If you wish, I will provide information and knowledge to help you understand your options plan your actions.
I support you to make key decisions so you can decide how you want to shape your future. It’s your journey, and you have to be on board to get there.
The Discovery programme consists of 2 sessions, by the end of which you will have a personalised lifestyle journey plan.
Change Programme - the 'how' It’s all very well deciding where you want to go, but getting there it is quite a different matter. If it were that easy, you probably would be doing it already.
This programme is all about learning and practising the skills you need to actually make the changes you want to make. You will learn about how habits are formed, and how to change them.
Working with me will enable you to develop personalised strategies for managing change, monitoring your progress and dealing with set-backs.
I will be your ‘critical friend’ – supporting and encouraging you, but also acknowledging difficulties and helping you keep to plan, or reformulate your plan if it’s not working for you. There’s no criticism from me - if it isn’t working, we’ll just try something else.
Change is easier to achieve when you’re not working alone, so part of my role is to be the ‘parrot on your shoulder’ reminding you of your chosen direction and holding you accountable for your progress.
The Change programme consists of 6 sessions, by the end of which you will have your personalised lifestyle journey plan, developed strategies for doing implementing your plan, practised them, and be on your way to making longer-term positive health changes in your life.
Where does coaching take place? We will discuss and agree a convenient time and location. Ideally coaching will take place face-to-face in a convenient location, and if possible, we will 'walk and talk', as being outside whilst taking some gentle exercise is a great way to run a coaching session. Alternatively we may speak by video chat, which means I can help you no matter where you are located.
How many sessions will I need? All coaching programmes are personalised, but typically we will work together for 1-6 sessions, once every 2-8 weeks. Each session is usually 1-1.5 hours except for the first session which is longer to cover our initial scene-setting discussions.
How do I find out more about working with you before I make a commitment? It is important that you are comfortable with my approach and style, therefore I offer an initial free consultation to discuss what you're looking for, and for you find out more about how I can help and support you. You could also meet me at one of my Workshops if you wish to get more of a feel for how I work.
What do I need to prepare before my first session? I have a simple Details Form which I ask you to complete before our first session, which includes some prompts to help you think about what you might want to achieve from the programme. Other than that, just bring yourself and an open mind. I practice a non-directive form of coaching, which means I enable you, through a collaborative process called 'guided discovery', to find your own conclusions and solutions. So even if you're not sure exactly what you want to achieve, I will help you undercover what is right for you.
How much does it cost? Your initial consultation is free of charge. Individual coaching sessions are £45 each (up to 1.5 hours) and the first session is £60 as it is usually longer. Programmes are priced individually (see above) and are payable in advance.
How can I be sure I'm going to benefit from your coaching programme? Coaching is all about you, what you want to achieve and how much you are prepared to put in to the process. It's a bit like the old adage - 'you get out what you put in'.
Having said that, coaching is proven to achieve amazing results if you are ready and committed to moving forwards in your life. From a practical point of view, each session will start with a discussion about what you want to achieve, and finish with a progress review and an agreement of what's going to happen next. That way there will be structure, purpose and progress and all our work will be personalised to your needs.
I practice cognitive behavioural coaching, which means that I can help you change habits, behaviours, thoughts and beliefs.
Furthermore, one of the aims of coaching is to help you develop the necessary skills to become your own coach! By using the knowledge and skills you will acquire in our sessions, you will develop new and effective ways of dealing with challenges in the future.
